WHAT IGNITED THE SPARK IN YOU TO START THEBUSINESS VENTURE
I have been very passionate about technology for a very long time now. My love for tech began when I used to volunteer at All saints cathedral church. I’d have access to the then Teens pastor Rev. Francis Awando’s office where I would spend countless hours online learning how to design graphics, programming and developments which then I would use to serve the ministry with. From those simple engagements, I learnt how to design service sheets for the church, did pamphlets and posters and managed the social media platforms for the ministry.
These made me think of how best I would position myself, having that I had an idea of where I would want to be and what I would want to do, and develop intellectually as I develop a network base for the company idea I had. At some point while in Daystar University after gaining vast knowledge on programming, networking and computer security. I decided to channel my passion into computer security where I’d do PENTESTs for individuals, companies and organizations to discover vulnerabilities presented on their systems and offer them solutions for money. At this point is where the core of MAG-TECH INC was formed.
In 2016, MTI had recruited students from the university to help us champion the goals and objectives the company had. We realized that the market was not as we anticipated hence formed ITIPS to cater for the day to day IT needs giving us some financial stability to support the objectives of MTI. Later in 2017, I accidentally broke my phone while working on some mobile application for a client on money lending. I took the phone for repairs to one of the major service providers (name withheld) in town who took a very long time in repairing the device. I later on inquired on the pricing and repair procedures in bid to develop a rapport with one of the workers there. I uncovered the amount of money one can make based on the structure they use to repair these devices thus coming up with a policy to cub the day to day risks involving the mobile and electronic devices.
At this point EPD insurance was formed. In bid to know the need of our services, we did roll out the operations and got over 400 subscriptions in four days of our trial period. Since then, we have had major partnerships and investments that is to enable us propel our services to the next level. Our clientele has grown tremendously and will be doing a major launch of the product in due time.
HOW DIFFERENT IS YOUR COMPANY FROM THAT OF YOUR COMPETITORS?
On MTI: We currently are the major company dealing with Home automation in East Africa. Our systems are of the highest standards and are internationally approved. We have a well dedicated and trained service team with the spirit of “our clients, our priority”.
On ITIPS: We pride on our numeral and most satisfied clientele who have intern cut short our marketing budget by spreading the best of our services. We have developed a reputed business, honoring our word and fulfilling beyond the expectations of our clients.
We, as well, have a team of highly qualified professionals with certification in Google Ad words and ISO standards providing a wide range of services in order to generate higher visitor traffic to client’s websites.In short, we do our best at all times.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAILURES, AND WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM THEM?
One of the things that I’d say we have learnt greatly was on customer relations. Most of our clients had a rough picture of what they want and we also had a great picture of what our client needed only that we thought our thought was the best for the client. We learnt on the need to “baby walk” our clients and show them on how best we can generate their picture to an attractive canvas.
When forming MTI, I did just issue out shares without thinking of the repercussions presented by that action. Most of the people I threw responsibility to had no commitment whatsoever to the vision the company had.
What I’ve learnt from that and maybe would want to extend that to upcoming entrepreneurs is to identify a strong need and networked person who shares the same interest with you but not on 100% and can help you scale your business to a higher level. These people are normally not an organization or a corporate. Identify that one person who has the links to the networks you need then formulate the company on the basis of value addition. Do not throw shares here and there just for the sake. Note that the current laws allows you to be the only director in your company. Take advantage of that.
WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN
VENTURING ON A SIMILAR BUSINESS AS YOURS?
My advice would be, get to know your passion and desire. Formulate on the basis of client satisfaction and get your market segment right. It can be very challenging if you are here form monetary purposes only.
